“Be Still and Know that I Am God” — Ps.46:10
Christian Contemplative Spirituality and Centering/Contemplative Prayer:
The “Introductory Workshop to Centering Prayer” is for those individuals who want to deepen their relationship with God on their spiritual journey. “Centering Prayer is a method designed to facilitate the development of Contemplative Prayer by preparing our faculties to receive this gift of God. It represents ancient Christian wisdom teachings in an updated form. It is a relationship with God and a discipline to foster that relationship... It is the opening of mind and heart - our whole being to God, the Ultimate Mystery, beyond thoughts, words and emotions. Through grace we open our awareness to God whom we know by faith is within us, closer than breathing, closer than thinking, closer than consciousness itself. The Ultimate Mystery is the ground in which our being is rooted, the Source from which our life emerges at every moment...Interior silence is one of the most strengthening and affirming of human experiences. There is nothing more affirming, in fact, than the experience of God’s presence. That revelation says as nothing else can, “You are a good person. I created you and I love you.” “
The spiritual journey has been described as the surrender or death of the old, false, wounded, conditioned self in order to be healed, transformed, and reborn to our True Self, communion with-in God. “Centering Prayer is a very personal prayer practice but is often practiced in groups. It opens one to God’s infinite Presence of Love and power to heal, and opens the door to service and other related prayer practices around forgiveness, and dealing with painful situations and emotions... “Thomas Keating has described God’s Spirit of Love found in Centering/Contemplative Prayer as a Divine Therapy which we all need for our human condition and the many forms of our human woundedness, personal and social. Centering/Contemplative Prayer is very important on our transforming spiritual journey of Love to healing, reconciliation, strength, service, peace, justice, light and life as God intended us to live it. On our Christian spiritual journey toward transformative union with-in God and being-becoming Loving co-creators with God’s creation/evolution, “our ongoing conversion involves such fruits as compassion, humility, healing, spontaneous creativity, just reconciliation, peace and joy”(-Tilden Edwards).
“Centering Prayer provides an invaluable road-map for the transformation from self-centeredness to the union with God for which we all long... This Christ-centered Love takes us out of ourselves...and enables us to work for others with great liberty of Spirit (and strength), because one is no longer seeking one’s own ego-centered goals but responding to reality as it is... You perceive everyone’s desperate need of help. The transcendent potential of most people is still waiting to be realized, and this awakens a great sense of compassion...”
